    The honest answer is: it depends — on your boiler type, your current coal price, your volume, and whether you can absorb the 6–18 month transition period. This article gives you a transparent, number-based comparison so you can make the decision for your specific situation.

    The True Cost Calculation

    Price per tonne is misleading. What matters is price per unit of heat delivered to your boiler — accounting for calorific value, boiler efficiency, and ash disposal costs.

    Let's use a real example: a 10-tonne/hour boiler at a West Bengal textile mill currently running on F-grade Indian coal:

    This example shows that even though bio pellets cost ₹2,000/MT more, the lower ash disposal cost and higher GCV make the total operating cost lower. The savings compound further if you factor in reduced boiler maintenance from lower ash fouling.

    CO₂ Savings: The Hidden Value

    Bio pellets made from agricultural waste are considered carbon-neutral under India's climate accounting framework (and internationally under IPCC guidelines) because the CO₂ released was recently absorbed by the crops.

    Switching from coal to bio pellets at the mill above (consuming ~3,500 MT/year of coal) avoids approximately 7,200 tonnes of CO₂ per year — equivalent to taking 1,500 cars off the road.

    Under India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), these verified emission reductions will have monetary value. Early movers who establish baseline and monitoring today will be best positioned to claim credits when the market matures.

    Boiler Compatibility: What You Need to Know

    Bio pellets work well in most Indian industrial boilers with little or no modification:

    • Stoker-fired boilers — direct 100% substitution in most cases; feed screw or conveyor adjustment may be needed
    • Spreader stoker / travelling grate — works well; set grate speed for pellet burn characteristics
    • CFBC (Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion) — excellent compatibility; pellets improve combustion stability vs coal
    • Pulverised fuel (PF) boilers — requires milling; typically used for co-firing at 5–20% rather than full substitution

    We recommend starting with a 20–30% co-firing trial before full substitution. This lets your boiler operator calibrate combustion parameters, air ratios, and feed rates without risk to production.

    When Coal Remains the Better Choice

    To give a fair comparison: bio pellets are not always the better choice:

    • If you have a long-term coal supply contract at well below market prices (e.g., linkage coal below ₹5,000/MT), the economics may still favour coal
    • If your boiler requires temperatures above 1,100°C (some ceramics and glass kilns), standard bio pellets may not reach the required flame intensity without modification
    • If your storage area is extremely constrained — bio pellets require covered storage to prevent moisture absorption
